FROM THIS AUTHOR

DIG DEEPER

I joined 20 descendants of slaves during the USCTI Cato Freedom Conference and Think Tank. Descendants from the Eastern Seaboard and Tennessee discussed family histories of their enslaved ancestors. Along with Hartwick students, faculty and staff, we formed the American Freedmen Descendants Commission and worked to establish the American Society of Freedmen’s Descendants, a group dedicated to respecting the societal contributions of enslaved Americans. Participants inspired me to continue my research of USCT Civil War soldiers and their family connections to our region of New York State.
